When Lake Region’s new Vice Principal outlined the cell phone policy in a letter home to families, many students reacted intensely. Some students who frequently use their phones during class justified their actions, claiming, “My phone is a learning tool.” Others dismissed the rule as “ridiculous” or “superfluous,” despite being known for browsing Instagram throughout the day.
A few students alleged that the policy is simply propaganda by teachers to undermine independent learning. When questioned, students sent to the office for phone use said, “being on our phones is a protest against this law.”
However, according to the referring teacher, these students were actually playing Clash of Clans after stating, “I’m bored.”
As many know, looking at a screen for extended periods of time can cause eye strain. Students argue that they can also get whiteboard strain. Because of the phone ban, the school board started setting up PAMs (Phone Anonymous Meetings) with the hope of getting students off their phones. The LR Post was there for the first meeting, and we heard a mix of results. We heard statements including, “It’s been three minutes since I sent a snap. I need my phone” and “I haven’t sent a TikTok to my friend in an hour.” Another sentiment that was expressed was, “I have no more help from ChatGPT.”
In other news, the LR Wifi signal has been increased; the increase is yet to be felt by most students.
