Although the basketball season is young, there is already shocking news even ahead of the first scrimmage for the Lake Region boys basketball team. Although the LR boys managed to take home a win last night there was a player that was notably absent. The Star player with three years of varsity experience and 938 points in his career was ticketed for speeding recently. After the incident was discovered by the athletic director, who used the pseudonym Flames Dentworth to communicate with The Shallot, he took the step of immediately ensuring that the player, who won’t be named in this story, as he is a minor, was removed from the team and is now pushing for his expulsion. Currently, both the principal and assistant principal at Lake Region do not believe that expulsion is an appropriate disciplinary measure for the player, who had previously committed to playing D1 basketball at Duke.
The incident occurred after the second night of tryouts when the player was driving home from practice. They were pulled over by Officer Bob Williams at 6:08 PM on Tuesday the second of December. The player was given a ticket for doing 5 over in the school zone by Orleans Elementary school. In a statement from the Sheriffs department of Orleans county they said that “While this isn’t an offense that could result in jail time it is still serious as there was an event happening at the school on the night of the whole school concert and a child could have been injured or worse.” Flames Dentworth said in his interview with The Shallot that although there is little legally that will happen to the student that doesn’t change the fact that this has caused a serious stain on the reputation of the LR basketball program and the school as a whole. The damage to the schools sterling reputation is what has caused Dentworth to push for the now former player’s expulsion.
After the player was informed that he wouldn’t be allowed to continue competing with LR or even practicing with the team he told ESPN of this and that has resulted in a near constant group of athletic directors showing up at the school to try and woo the 5 star recruit. Although recruiting is technically illegal under VPA guidelines, a prospect with the potential this player has is resulting in attempts none the less. These attempts have led Dentworth to file several complaints to the VPA regarding the sports cars that have been anonymously left for the player and asking that the player be blacklisted from all VPA sanctioned sports so that these events can stop. The VPA has not responded to multiple requests for comment as they say it is an ongoing case.
The serious crime has also not resulted in the retraction of Duke’s commitment to the player. In fact they even have a representitive that has been among the assorted men that will bring the player an energy drink in the morning as he walks into school and have left a Subaru WRX for the player in the parking lot with a gift basket in the passenger seat. Duke University declined to comment for this story.
The player is still a student at LR as of press time.
